PromoteGIS was incorporated in 2006 in the State of Delaware, USA as a non-profit organization to promote the use of maps, geographic information systems (GIS), and Citizen Media related technologies at the grassroots level in under-developed communities around the world.

Introduction of these technologies can empower communities in developing countries and strengthen their participation in the decision making processes that affect their daily lives. It can enhance their level of participation in international donor agency projects and substantially improve the results of these initiatives, giving communities confidence in and ownership of the results.

PromoteGIS is an impartial, neutral and independent public charity that works to achieve its goals with the support of partners and volunteers in different countries around the world under the guidelines of United States Internal Revenue Code for not-for-profit charities.
